This show had a huge impact on me as it brought together many of the best young portrait painters working at that time and Brendan was one of them

Unkind words such as ‘dirgy’ and ‘depressing’ are bandied about and there is general agreement that this is a ‘Matthew’ picture

At one level of appreciation this is a  beautifully painted figurative work by a leading nineteenth century Swedish artist
